Fighting Spam

Hello everybody,

from time to time I'll take a look at the forums' users, that didn't create a post, yet. In case they've unexpected websites or signatures I'll delete them without warning. I hope to stop creating spam in the forums just before new threads get opened.

Real life people should not be affected of this, cause people (mostly wink ) don't register without writing messages.

Today we had such a "time"... and I removed about 15 users without posts, but unwanted website entries or signatures.

Best regards,
Lars Knickrehm

Re: Fighting Spam

Just enabled the next step to get rid of spam users:

When changing the mail address of an user and while registration you need to verify your mail address. Our server should be fast enough. Just wait maximum five minutes (regularly mails get send in time though).

Re: Fighting Spam

I just installed a simple plugin for FluxBB to prevent bots from registering in the forums. Let's hope the bots aren't clever enough to get around it.

It's http://fluxbb.org/resources/mods/very-s … istration/ ... Let's hope it's enough. This way we don't need to transfer data to third parties nor captcha images.

Re: Fighting Spam

Did some manual cleaning: Checked all users with two or less posts. Users from last year and without posts got removed without recheck.

Re: Fighting Spam

Maybe do a security question, works great.
No annoying captcha's yet effective.

Re: Fighting Spam

Thanks for the tip. Already thought about it, but since I installed http://fluxbb.org/resources/mods/very-s … istration/ there were no big "storms".

The removed users were mainly from before installing the registration security modification.

Re: Fighting Spam

Two other spammers:
1) http://forums.lars-sh.de/viewtopic.php?pid=931#p931
2) http://forums.lars-sh.de/profile.php?id=203 -> Here I'm not really sure because it has never published a topic, but take a look at the Website and Signature in the profile information...

why don't you use reCaptcha on registration form?

I recommended reCapthca because it's powered by google, and i think that Big G takes really care on fighting spam.

reCaptcha is annoying as hell, scares away users almost as much as it scares away bots.

Yes i know...but in my forum I prefer to annoy a little bit the users, rather than having a jungle like eyeOS forum, where all the topics are about Gucci, Versace, sunglasses etc... smile
however feel free to suggest any other good practice against spam.

For example a good practice that many other forums use, is that the first topic/post must be approved by a Moderator

Re: Fighting Spam

Just to let everybody know it: Users, that didn't wrote a post 'til now and either registered earlier than about a month ago or had malicious urls in their profile information have all rigorously been deleted.

Additionally I disallow BBCode in signatures here in the forums from now on.

Spam: http://forums.oneye-project.org/viewtopic.php?id=227

Suggestion for fighting spam:

- The first 3 (or more) posts of a new registered user, need to be moderated by admin before to be published
